Spanish Supper Club 101: What Actually Happens at the Table

News

Here’s What Actually Happens at the Table

A table of six.

All around your level.

A restaurant somewhere in San Diego.

Two hours where the only rule is hablamos español.

That’s it.

That’s the whole idea.

It’s not a class

There’s no worksheet.

No corrections written in red pen.

No one’s tracking verb conjugations.

It’s a weeknight out with people who happen to share this wonderful, slightly obsessive interest: learning Spanish as an adult, on purpose, for real reasons.

You’ll meet people outside your usual class time or level.

Maybe someone from a Tuesday group when you’re always in the Thursday one.

Maybe someone a level ahead who remembers exactly how it felt to be where you are now.

You might make an actual friend.

It happens more than you’d think.

Why it works

Class gives you the tools.

The supper club is where you actually pick them up and use them, over guacamole, with zero pressure and a little wine.

For some of you, this is the extra rep that builds confidence faster than anything else you’re doing.

Talking to an app doesn’t quite compare to talking to a human who’s waiting to hear what you think about the salsa.

For others, it’s simpler than that.

It’s a reason to leave the house on a Tuesday and spend the evening speaking Spanish instead of scrolling.

Also a solid reason to leave the house on a Tuesday, period.

If you’re stuck

Spanish is the vibe, not the law.

If you get stuck mid-sentence, you can describe around the word, mime it, gesture wildly.

Nobody’s enforcing anything.

The table’s on your side.

How it works

Grouped by level (A2 and up), announced about a month ahead, with RSVP closing five days before.

You’ll get restaurant details the day before so you know exactly where you’re headed.

→ See how it works

Not in San Diego?

Tell us where you are.

We’re always looking for reasons to bring PBO to new tables, in new cities, with new people who are ready to talk.

→ Let us know

Introducing the Spanish Supper Club

News

We’ve been sitting on this one for a while.

Here’s the short version: we made a new thing, and it doesn’t happen on Zoom.

It happens at a real table, with real food, and real people speaking Spanish out loud because they want to, not because they have to.

We’re calling it the Spanish Supper Club.

Why we made this

If you’ve been around PBO for a while, you know our whole method is built on one idea: the fastest way to get good at Spanish is to actually use it.

Not conjugate it.

Not study it.

Use it, the way you use your native language, which is to say messily, in the middle of a real conversation, usually while thinking about something else entirely.

Moving our classes online was a great move.

No driving, no traffic, no parking fees, and students can join us from anywhere.

But it also left our community wanting more chances to actually be together, in person.

We already run eight in-person events a year in San Diego, and we wanted to offer even more, both for our students and for other Spanish learners in San Diego.

Here’s the thing about most language meetups, though: they’re big.

Thirty people, forty people, every level mixed together.

Supper Club is the opposite of that.

It’s a small group, around six people, close to your level, curated ahead of time so you’re not spending the night hunting for someone to talk to.

It’s a chance to actually form friendships with people who get it, in a setting small enough that you’re not just another face in the crowd.

Our regular in-person events are for enrolled students only, but Supper Club also has a few seats for past students and other Spanish learners in the San Diego area.

Think of it as a nice extra rep between classes, not a replacement for them.

So really, Supper Club isn’t a new idea.

It’s the same conversational method PBO has always been built on.

We just took it off the screen.

Instead of a Zoom room, it’s a table.

Instead of a class, it’s dinner.

What actually happens at a dinner

Honestly, the same thing that happens when you go out to eat with your friends.

Except it’s in Spanish.

You show up.

You sit down with a small group of fellow Spanish learners.

You eat, you talk, you laugh, you mess up your subjunctive mid-bite and it’s ok!

There’s no teacher running the room and no lesson plan telling you what to talk about.

It’s just conversation, the way conversation actually works: unplanned, a little chaotic, and way more memorable than a worksheet.

Here’s the bar: if you can hold a two minute conversation in Spanish without switching to English, you’re in.

Doesn’t matter if you sound like a caveman doing it.

Nobody’s translating for you or slowing down to explain, so you do need enough Spanish to survive without a safety net, but you do not need to sound polished.

We’re talking A2 level and up.

You’re just… talking.

Like you would with friends.

Because that’s what this is.

Where and how?

Right now, Supper Club is a San Diego thing.

Small groups, real tables, real neighborhood spots.

Caro’s handling the logistics personally, which is a nice way of saying she’s picking restaurants deliberately.

Wish you were at the table?

If you read all that and thought this sounds amazing and also I do not live anywhere near San Diego, we hear you.

That’s genuinely the worst part of building something small and in-person: the people who’d love it most are sometimes the farthest from it.

So tell us where you are.

We’re always looking for reasons to bring PBO to new cities, and the only way we know where to go next is if you tell us you’re out there, waiting for a table of your own.

→ Not in San Diego? Let us know where you are.

→ Want more info? Want to sign up for a dinner?  Learn more here.

→ Not sure of your level? Book a free Spanish level assessment.

Buen provecho.

The Trail Closes Thursday: Last Call for Bootcamp 2026

News

Sign-ups for our 90-Day Spanish Bootcamp close this Thursday, September 10.

If you’ve followed along with the mountain metaphor all campaign, you know what’s coming: the final stretch before the trail closes for the year.

We won’t pitch you again here.

You’ve seen what the program covers, you’ve heard from past Bootcampers, and if you’re reading this, you probably already know whether it’s for you.

So instead, just one more thing to sit with:

“Bootcamp has definitely put me into a routine of thinking about (and in) Spanish first thing in the morning. It’s sort of like my cup of coffee but for the Spanish part of my brain.”

That’s what 90 days can build.

Not perfection.

A habit.

One that sticks.

If you’ve been on the fence, this is the moment.

After Thursday, sign-ups close until next year.

¡Destaca y domina!

The Owl Got Your Spanish This Far.
A Human Gets You the Rest of the Way.

News

Duolingo taught you “manzana.”

We’ll teach you to order the empanada, catch up with your suegra, and understand the joke.

Let’s be honest.

You’ve done the owl thing.

You’ve got a streak.

You can probably conjugate ser in your sleep.

And the second the conversation goes somewhere the app never covered, you’re on your own.

That’s not a you problem.

That’s an apps problem.

They’re built to keep you tapping, not talking.

Matching a word to a picture feels like progress, but it’s not the same muscle as thinking on your feet in a real conversation, with a real person, in real time.

No pause button.

No hearts to lose.

Just you, figuring it out.

That’s the part that actually makes you fluent.

Not another lesson streak.

Real back-and-forth, with all its glorious mess: half-finished sentences, the wrong verb tense, someone laughing with you (not at you) and helping you fix it.

That’s the whole idea behind PBO.

No worksheets, no gold stars.

Just conversation, from day one, with native speakers who feel more like new friends than instructors.

We talk about actual life.

Trips you took.

Family drama.

What you had for lunch.

The stuff that makes a language stick, because you’re using it, not memorizing it.

Small classes.

Real people.

Real corrections, in the moment, from someone who actually heard you say it wrong and can show you how to say it right.

You won’t get that from an app.

You’ll get it from conversation.

If you’re on the fence about Bootcamp…

News

If you’re on the fence about Bootcamp, chances are it’s not because you don’t want to improve your Spanish.

It’s probably because you’re picturing everything that could get in the way.

So let’s talk about that.

“What if I travel during Bootcamp?”

Most tasks can be done from anywhere.

Past Bootcampers have done this from hotel rooms, airports, even mid-vacation.

“Ninety days was a challenge as I had several vacations during the program, but it was worth it to persevere.”

“I am happy I was able to put my Spanish learning first, even while on vacation.”

“What if my class is full?”

Book early and you’ll get your preferred spot.

If it’s tight, you can take a lower-level class and participate, a higher-level class and just listen, or double up the following week.

“What if I have a genuinely rough week?”

Then you have a rough week.

It happens to almost everyone at some point during the 90 days.

The people who finish aren’t the ones who never struggle, they’re the ones who keep showing up anyway.

“Tuve una semana de mierda 💩, y hice todas las tareas del Bootcamp. Creo que esto en sí mismo es un gran logro.”

One more thing: sign-ups close Thursday, September 10.

If you’ve been meaning to join, lock it in.

→ Get the deets and lock in your spot

The ‘what ifs’ are always harder than the actual thing.

You just ran through all of yours.

Congrats!

Bootcamp 2026 is officially open 🏔️

News

Hola,

The wait’s over.

Bootcamp 2026 is officially here.

The details:

📅 Starts Saturday, September 12 | Ends Thursday, December 10

💰 Starting at $149/month (plus $19/month for Patreon, where Bootcamp lives) 🎒 Bootcamp-only class package available

⏰ Deadline to join: Thursday, September 10

Here’s the thing about Bootcamp.

We won’t tell you it’s easy.

90 straight days of daily practice, weekly classes, and real accountability is a genuine commitment.

But we’ve been doing this for over a decade, and the results, for the people who see it through, are honestly kind of wild.

Like:

  • “My high school best friend heard me speak Spanish for the first time and she was SO impressed! She didn’t know how hard I’d been working!!!”

Language learning is usually measured in years.

Bootcamp is our favorite exception to that rule.

90 focused days, real structure, a community that’s got your back, and you’d be amazed what happens.

See full details and sign up

Not ready to commit yet but curious?

The full landing page has everything: the daily/weekly/monthly breakdown, FAQs, cost, all of it.

The trail’s open. Let’s go.
