Spanish Supper Club: 36 Students, 4 Restaurants, One Delicious Evening

News

¡Hola amig@s!

Well, that was fun.

Our very first Spanish Supper Club brought together 36 students at 6 tables in 4 different restaurants across San Diego.

One evening, six people per table, and a whole lot of Spanish over good food.

The feedback from students has been fantastic, and we’re so glad you enjoyed it.

Honestly, that’s exactly what we were hoping for: real conversations, new friends, and nobody checking the time.

Why dinner is the perfect Spanish classroom

When I moved to the US, I had gone to an American school in Chile for years.

I still couldn’t hold a conversation.

Later I studied French for four years, went to France, and the same thing happened.

All those years of study, and I still couldn’t really talk to anyone.

That’s why everything at Pura Buena Onda starts with conversation.

Class is where you build the skill.

A dinner table is where you get to use it, with real people, real food, and real topics that have nothing to do with a textbook.

Think dinner party, but in Spanish, and you don’t have to do dishes.

Join us for the next Spanish Supper Club

Good news: we’ve got one more Spanish Supper Club evening coming up this year.

  • When: Tuesday, November 10 at 6:45 pm
  • Who: Students at level A2 and up
  • Cost: $19 to reserve your seat, and you pay for your own meal at the restaurant
  • Current students: You get $5 off! Find the discount code in your weekly newsletter.
  • RSVP by: Thursday, November 5

Tables are small, so seats are limited. Save your seat here.

How it works

  1. You sign up.
  2. The day before, we send you the restaurant details.
  3. On the day, you show up to the restaurant and sit down with fellow students around your level.

That’s it.

All you have to do is show up hungry and ready to talk!

New around here?

You’re welcome at the table too.

A quick level assessment is all it takes, unless you’ve done one with us in the last 6 months.

Not in San Diego?

Want a Spanish Supper Club in your city?

Tell us where you are.

We’re always looking for reasons to bring PBO to new tables.

Provecho,

Caro

La mini lección: El futuro simple A2 y el futuro perfecto A3-C2

News

la mini-lección: El futuro simple A2

We are going to take a look at the simple future tense in Spanish.

We use this tense to describe something that will happen in the future.

In English, we use the word will in front of the verb.

For example:

El año que viene compraré un sofá nuevo.

(Next year I will (I’ll) buy a new couch.)

Now, some good news: the conjugation is the same for -ar, -er, and -ir verbs!

AND, you don’t even have to remove the verb ending, because we connect the ending directly to the infinitive (the -ar, -er, -ir version of the verb)!!!

For example:

Yo viajaré (I will travel)

Tú viajarás (You will travel)

Ella, él viajará (Etc…)

Nosotr@s viajaremos

Ell@s viajarán

la mini-lección: El futuro perfecto A3-B2

We are going to take a look at the future perfect tense.

We use this tense to express a future action that will have ended before another future action.

For example:

Antes de acostarme habré cenado.

I will have eaten dinner before I go to bed.

It is formed by an auxiliary (helping) verb (haber) in the future form and a main verb (in the past participle form).

The past participle is obtained by taking the verb root and adding the ending -ado for -ar verbs, and -ido for -er and -ir verbs.

Por ejemplo:

Yo habré hablado (I will have talked)

Tú habrás hablado (You will have talked)

Ella, él, usted habrá hablado (Etc…)

Nosotr@s habremos hablado

Ellas, ellos, ustedes habrán hablado

There are some exceptions.

For example: hacer – hecho, decir- dicho or ver – visto.

The future perfect in Spanish is also used to express probability, and to talk about something that might have happened in the past.

For example:

No queda pastel en la nevera. Se lo habrá comido papá.

There’s no cake left in the fridge. Dad must have eaten it.

What Makes a Great Online Spanish Class?

News

When I was in middle school, my family moved from Chile to the United States.

I’d spent a couple of years at an American school back home, so I walked into my new classroom feeling ready.

I knew tons of vocabulary.

I knew my grammar rules.

I had studied English.

Then people started talking to me, and I had no idea what they were saying.

It got worse.

The teacher put the spotlight on me and asked me to speak to the class.

I couldn’t.

Not one sentence.

For the first couple of weeks, I went home crying

In high school, I studied French for four years.

I could count.

I could name colors.

I could ask where the bathroom was and say something about the weather.

So I went to France, full of hope, and tried to have real conversations.

Every time, whatever I actually wanted to say, I didn’t know how.

After a few tries, I gave up.

I felt awful.

Fast forward to adulthood, and then came Italian.

By then I’d been running Pura Buena Onda for years and had watched conversation-first teaching work, student after student.

So I asked my Italian teacher if he’d teach me the same way I teach Spanish.

He said yes.

I took classes for a little over a year, a fraction of the hours I’d poured into English and French, so my level never got very high (A2 speaking, B1 comprehension).

I haven’t had a lesson in years.

And yet, when I went to Italy last fall, I talked with so many people!

Basic conversations, sure.

But real ones, back and forth.

It was amazing.

Same person.

Same brain (and a much older brain, at that).

Completely different result.

The difference was the method.

You can’t study your way into speaking

Learning a language by studying it is like learning to swim by reading about swimming. You can memorize every stroke and still sink the second you hit the pool.

You have to get in the water to actually learn to swim.

So if you’re shopping for an online Spanish class, especially if you’re a little skeptical about learning through a screen, here’s what getting in the water actually looks like.

What to look for

1. At least 75% of the class is conversation

This is the big one.

A lot of online classes are really grammar lessons with a webcam.

Look for a class where you spend at least three quarters of the time speaking and listening.

If the class description reads like a textbook table of contents, keep looking.

2. It’s interactive, not a lecture

Being lectured in person is boring enough.

Being lectured on a screen?

That’s a whole new level of snooze.

A great online class feels like a lively chat around a kitchen table.

You answer questions, react, laugh, tell stories, and get gently corrected in the moment.

You should log off a little tired, in the best way.

3. The group is small

Three to six students is the sweet spot.

Enough people to keep things interesting, with new voices and different opinions.

Few enough that nobody fades into the background.

Prefer the teacher all to yourself?

Private classes are great too.

Or grab a friend or partner and take a class together.

4. Group classes run 90 minutes

Here’s something most people don’t expect: in a group, 60 minutes flies by.

Just when everyone’s warmed up and the conversation gets good, it’s over.

Ninety minutes gives a group class room to breathe, so you leave feeling like you really talked.

For private classes or two students, 60 minutes is perfect.

5. The teacher knows how to run a conversation

Zoom is just the room.

The teacher makes the class.

Look for teachers who are trained to guide a conversation, draw out the quieter students, and keep the energy up.

Bonus points if they’ve been in your shoes.

At Pura Buena Onda, every teacher learned a foreign language as an adult, so they know exactly what it feels like to hunt for a word while everyone waits.

6. You’re in the right level

Too hard and you’re lost.

Too easy and you’re bored.

Either way, you stop showing up.

A good school takes placement seriously, so everyone in the group is stretching together.

Why online can actually be better

Here’s the part skeptics don’t see coming.

Online opens the door to teachers from all over Latin America and Spain, so you hear different accents and expressions instead of just one.

There’s also no commute.

No traffic.

Ever.

You’re welcome.

That makes it so much easier to show up week after week, and showing up is where the real progress happens.

And online doesn’t have to mean alone.

At PBO, students also get together for social events, some virtual and some in person in San Diego, so their Spanish gets out into the real world too.

Get in the water

If you’ve taken classes before and still can’t hold a conversation, it probably wasn’t you.

It was the method.

Ready to finally start talking?

Come take a class with us at Pura Buena Onda.

The water’s great.

La mini lección: El condicional perfecto A2-C2

News

la mini-lección: El condicional perfecto A2:

We are going to cover the conditional perfect tense in Spanish.

The conditional perfect is used to express possibility in the past, and actions that could or would have taken place as a consequence of a hypothetical past.

For example:

Cuando era pequeño nunca habría imaginado que un día viviría en otro país.

When I was little, I would have never imagined that one day I would live in another country.

The conditional perfect is conjugated with the verb haber in the conditional plus the main verb.

The ending of the verbs -ar is replaced with -ado and the ending of the verbs -er, -ir is replaced with -ido.

Let’s look at an example with the verb beber:

Yo habría bebido

Tú habrías bebido

Ella, él, usted habría bebido

Nosotr@s habríamos bebido

Ellas, ellos, ustedes habrían bebido

Note: The use of the imperfect subjunctive form of haber (hubiera) in the conditional perfect is widespread and accepted.

For example:

Yo hubiera bebido.

Why We Close Supper Club Sign-Ups 5 Days Early (And Why You’ll Thank Us)

News

Picture this.

You walk into a cozy San Diego restaurant, a little nervous, rehearsing “Hola, mucho gusto” in your head.

You sit down, and within ten minutes you’re laughing about someone’s disastrous attempt to order tacos in Mexico City.

In Spanish.

And it’s working.

That’s the Spanish Supper Club.

Small tables, good food, and real conversation with people who are right around your level.

But that magic doesn’t happen by accident.

Which brings us to the one thing you need to know.

Sign-ups close 5 days before each dinner

We know, we know.

Five days feels like a lot when you’re the kind of person who decides on Thursday what you’re doing Friday. (We see you. We love you.)

Here’s why it matters.

We don’t just throw people at a table and hope for the best.

We build each table by hand, grouping everyone close to their level so the conversation actually flows.

Nobody’s lost.

Nobody’s bored.

Nobody spends the whole night nodding politely while someone else does all the talking.

That takes a little time, so the cutoff is firm.

Then the day before dinner, you’ll get an email with the restaurant details, and all you have to do is show up hungry.

What to expect at the table

The dinners are for A2 level and up, so you’ll want enough Spanish to hold a basic conversation.

Perfection is not required.

Forgot a word?

Describe it. Mime it.

Draw it on a napkin.

Some of the best laughs of the night come from exactly those moments.

You’ll pay for your meal directly at the restaurant, so you order what you actually want to eat.

New around here?

A quick level assessment is all it takes, unless you’ve done one with us in the last 6 months.

It helps us seat you with the right crew.

So if you’ve been meaning to trade a night on the couch for a night out speaking Spanish, this is your window.

Don’t let it close on you.

¡Provecho!

La mini lección: El Condicional A2-B2 y Verbos Irregulares en Condicional B3-C2

News

la mini-lección: El condicional A2

We will take a look at the conditional tense in Spanish.

The conditional tense is used to describe what someone would do or what would happen in the future.

It can also be used to express ambitions and intentions.

For example:

Yo compraría los boletos de avión lo antes posible.

I would buy the plane tickets as soon as possible.

El viernes sería un buen día para ir a la playa.

Friday would be a good day to go to the beach.

The three kinds of verbs; -ar, -er, -ir; have the same conjugation in the conditional.

The conjugation is simply attached to the infinitive, the non-conjugated form of the verb.

Let’s look at an example with the verb beber (to drink):

Yo bebería (I would drink)

Tú beberías (you would drink)

Ella, él, usted bebería (etc…)

Nosotr@s beberíamos

Ellas, ellos, ustedes beberían
