Mini Lesson: Irregular verbs in Spanish (by level)

la mini-lección: Verbos irregulares en pretérito A2

Past tense verbs in Spanish, and particularly preterite verbs, can be confusing to many students.

As a reminder: the preterite tense is used to describe actions completed at a precise moment in the past.

Let’s take a look at some of the most irregular verbs in the preterite:

Ser – yo fui, tú fuiste…

Ir – yo fui, tú fuiste… (yes, same exact conjugation as for ser)

Dar – Yo di, tú diste…

Hacer – yo hice, tú hiciste…

Ver – yo vi, tú viste…

Estar – yo estuve, tú estuviste…

Tener – yo tuve, tú tuviste…

Decir – yo dije, tú dijiste…

Past tense verbs in Spanish, and particularly in the subjunctive, can be confusing to many students.

The imperfect subjunctive is used for doubt, uncertainty, wishes, or opinions about past events, and basically indicates an action in the past where the subjunctive is used in the past tense.

Let’s take a look at some of the most irregular verbs in the imperfect subjunctive:

Caber – yo cupiera o yo cupiese

Caer – yo cayera o yo cayese

Decir – Yo dijera o yo dijese

Tener – yo tuviera o yo tuviese

Hacer – yo hiciera o yo hiciese

Estar – yo estuviera o yo estuviese

Ver – yo viera o yo viese

Venir – yo viniera o yo viniese

Poder – yo pudiera o yo pudiese

Poner – yo pusiera o yo pusiese
