Affixes are made up of a few letters added to the beginning, middle, or end of a word that change its meaning.

We will take a closer look at 2 kinds of them: prefixes and suffixes.

 

Prefixes are added before the word they modify:

 

Antimeans opposition or contradiction.

For example:  antidepresivo (antidepressant), antihéroe (antihero)

 

Extra – means from outside or too much.

For example: extraterrestre (extraterrestrial), extraordinario (extraordinary)

 

Automeans something of one’s own, to oneself or by oneself.

For example: autógrafo (autograph), automóvil (automobile)

 

Suffixes are added after the word they modify:

 

Os@means abundance.

For example:  poderos@ (powerful), ansios@ (anxious)

 

Logía –  means study or science.

For example:  astrología (astrology), tecnología (technology)

 

It@ –  means small.

For example:  poquit@ (a little bit), perrit@ (puppy)
